I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the unprofessional and discriminatory treatment I experienced during a recent apartment showing at 12011 Hillside Ave.From the moment I arrived, I was told that we needed to wait a few minutes in order to allow the other prospective tenants to finish viewing the apartment; which was completely okay with me. However, it was clear that the agent was rushing through my process, stating that I needed to hurry because other people were waiting to view after me. I greeted him professionally, introducing myself and extending my hand for a handshake, but he kept his hands behind his back and did not reciprocate the introduction. The entire showing lasted less than five minutes, and when he abruptly asked if I had any questions, which I did, one of which I inquired about the broker’s fee. He stated it was $5,000 for a 1200 apartment —an amount that is highly excessive and seemingly arbitrary.When I asked about the square footage of the unit, he claimed not to know. I then asked how I could obtain that information, and he told me I would need to measure it myself. When I requested to take measurements on the spot, he refused, citing the next group of people waiting to view the unit. I politely asked the next prospective tenant if they would mind me taking a moment to measure, and they said they were fine with it. However, the agent immediately interjected, asserting that they did not have a say and that he controlled the process. He then dismissed me from the showing.Upon reflection, it became clear that the agent may have provided false information about the broker’s fee as a means to rush me out. Furthermore, the way I was treated in contrast to others strongly suggests discriminatory intent, making it seem as though people of my background were not welcome.This experience was not only unprofessional but also deeply concerning. No one should be subjected to such treatment when seeking housing.
