Dawson Manor Residence (YAI) Reviews
My brother has lived at Dawson Manor 2 (the residence on the 2nd floor of Dawson Manor). The building is nice, though I do not believe it is safe in the event of a fire. It is located on a fairly quiet block, just next door to a church. The quality of service there for residence appears to depend on who the individuals on duty are at any given moment. Most of the residents are elderly, and intellectual disability appears to range from moderate to severe in most cases, but they are mostly a peaceful bunch of folks. It is common to find them gathered in a common living room during the day, watching the TV, with staff on their cell phones or watching TV with them. Most recently, they are developing a position for an employee to engage the residents with activities. This has resulted in my brother becoming more communicative with the other residents there, and somewhat happier on a day to day basis. In general though, there does not appear to be much emphasis placed on keeping residents occupied with anything, though my brother reports that a couple of the folks working there will sometimes sit and talk with him.My brother's ankle mysteriously broke in three places last weekend, and he was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery and recovery until he'll be transferred to a local rehabilitation center. I had to demand that YAI provide round-the-clock staff for him at the hospital so that he doesn't freak out when he has a problem and can't get hold of a nurse and find himself completely alone. I'm finding that some of the staff they send are competent, and others are almost completely useless. I've also found that he'll be left alone for hours at a time, with no coverage, and I have not been alerted to these lapses in coverage.I worry how the cuts to Medicaid (that are very likely to come in the near future) will affect the residence for the worse. I find management at the house to be somewhat communicative, though not very transparent. I do hope to see that change. I also hope to find management more passionate about the well-being of their residents, and the person directing activities is a great start.I will update this review as I can and see fit as the situation develops.
