285 Riverside Dr Introduce
In the world of New York City real estate, certain addresses stand out not just for their location, but for their history, architectural significance, and the quality of life they offer. 285 Riverside Drive is one such address. More than just a building, it represents a classic New York living experience, combining the elegance of a bygone era with the comforts of modern city life. This distinguished pre-war cooperative is a testament to the city's rich architectural heritage, offering a unique opportunity to reside in a landmark building designed by one of the city's most renowned architects.
This is not a real estate agency in the traditional sense, but rather a residential cooperative building. However, for those seeking to buy a home or even rent in one of New York City's most desirable neighborhoods, this building is a point of interest that is well worth exploring. It is a community unto itself, with a distinct set of rules and features that define the living experience. Its presence on Riverside Drive, with its breathtaking views and tranquil surroundings, makes it a highly coveted address. The building's reputation for quality and its full-service amenities are a significant draw for people who value classic design and a serene living environment away from the city's most frantic pace.
Built in 1926 and designed by the legendary architect Rosario Candela, the building's elegant facade and grand lobby, adorned with intricate coffered ceilings and stained glass, set a tone of refined living from the moment you step inside. The cooperative model of the building means that residents are shareholders in the corporation that owns the property, offering a unique sense of community and control over their living environment. While the process of purchasing a co-op is different from a condo, the rewards of living in such a well-maintained and historically significant building are immense. The building's management and doormen, as noted in reviews, contribute to a sense of security and a welcoming atmosphere.
Located at 285 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10025, the building is perfectly situated on the Upper West Side, overlooking the lush greenery of Riverside Park and the majestic Hudson River. The main entrance is on 101st Street, a detail that provides a sense of quiet and privacy away from the bustling thoroughfare of Riverside Drive. This prime location offers residents the best of both worlds: a peaceful, park-like setting and easy access to all the amenities of the Upper West Side.
The accessibility of this location is excellent. It is a "walker's paradise" and a "rider's paradise" with a walk score of 93 and a transit score of 100, respectively. Residents are just a short walk from the 1 train at 103rd Street and the express trains (1, 2, 3) at 96th Street, making commuting to Midtown, Downtown, and other parts of the city a breeze. The A, B, and C lines at 103rd Street are also within a manageable walking distance. The location is also well-served by numerous bus routes, and for those who enjoy biking, the area is considered "very bikeable" with a bike score of 73. The proximity to Riverside Park provides immediate access to miles of paths for jogging, biking, or simply enjoying the outdoors with a nice breeze from the park, as mentioned by a resident. While a review notes that catching a cab can sometimes be a challenge, the robust public transportation options more than make up for it. The building’s address is a quintessential Upper West Side location, surrounded by excellent schools, local shops, and a variety of dining options.

The process for subletting is also an option for shareholders, as noted by a reviewer who saw a rental listing on a public website.

The doormen are all very nice and helpful. The entrance is on 101st Street. There's usually a nice breeze coming from the park. Getting a cab from here requires either walking up the hill to West End or getting lucky.
July 20 · J.K.C.One of the apartments in this building just turned up on Craigslist. Thought that was odd. It seems to be a condo or a co-op but why would someone be renting that way? Odd. (not passing judgment).
