The Artisan Introduce
The Artisan, located at 180 Broome Street, is a contemporary apartment complex that stands as part of the ambitious Essex Crossing mixed-use development in New York City's historic Lower East Side. Designed by Handel Architects, The Artisan is intended to be more than just a place to live; it’s a "curated living space for the creative New Yorker." The building, which was built in 2020, is a 25-story structure housing 263 residential units. The design is inspired by the nearby Williamsburg Bridge, with large windows and oversized frames that provide residents with extensive views of the cityscape, including the Williamsburg Bridge, the Empire State Building, and One World Trade Center. It combines a mix of residential apartments with a commercial podium, creating a true live-work-play environment within a single building.
The Artisan is a key component of the Essex Crossing project, a 1.9-million-square-foot development that includes market and affordable housing, a variety of retail spaces, a new and expanded Essex Street Market, and a new urban park. This integration into a larger, vibrant community is a defining feature of the building. While the exterior of The Artisan is praised for its modern aesthetic, and the interiors for their tasteful design, some residents have noted challenges with building management and maintenance. The reviews from real residents indicate that while the physical space and location are highly desirable, there have been some issues with service, including communication and responsiveness from leasing agents and management. However, the complex’s prime location and modern amenities remain strong points of appeal for prospective residents. The building aims to offer a comfortable and convenient living experience with a host of in-unit and community features, designed to cater to a modern urban lifestyle.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The Artisan, is lovely from the outside. Inside, there are workers who are very pleasant and receptive. However on giving this review I have some issues. I'm surprised there aren't more complaints from the residents! I understand it can take ages to get your machines up and running as they should and when they think they are fixed, they break down shortly after. There is an ongoing issue I also learned about pending the management. Like I said it's a lovely place but, but management needs to come up and do more. Pictures at a later date.
February 23 · Marcia -DThe leasing agent Alexandra Goodman is completely incompetent. I had a 4pm booked, confirmed multiple times and she just decided to go home early and not answer my calls. The front desk is equally incompetent, saying they are a third party operator and can’t call them.In addition to renting at the Artisan, I was considering buying a condo next door at Essex Crossing. NOT ANYMORE!!
November 18 · Mike MOverall: It’s not a terrible place to live, but expected better for the price. I’d give it 2.5 stars if that were a rating option google provided (3 stars seems a bit generous).Pros: Close to Trader Joe’s and the subway. Good restaurants nearby.Cons: Very very thin walls, so your experience living here will depend significantly on whether you have reasonable neighbors. You can’t do much about the hallway noise though; that affects all units, and from what I hear it’s worse for units near the elevator. The building is located right next to the Williamsburg Bridge, so A LOT of traffic noise comes through CLOSED windows even at the higher floors—motorcycle noise at midnight is frequent and brutal. Management doesn’t seem to be on top of things (e.g. ignoring some of the terms in the lease; make sure you confirm everything before signing) and takes a while to respond. Had two separate building-wide water outage incidents that lasted for around 2 days each, and they left residents hanging re what was going on or when things would be fixed.Other info: amenities (gym, lounge, grill, rooftop, kids playroom) are charged separately, and the gym is super small and so can get crowded easily.
April 07 · Beth MThe area is super quiet, with easy access to the trains and a natural peace in the ecological environment of the lobby.
