Breaking Ground Schermerhorn Introduce
In the world of real estate, there is a sector that goes beyond traditional buying and selling, focusing instead on a social mission to provide a foundational need: a home. Breaking Ground is a leading non-profit organization in New York City that specializes in creating and managing supportive and affordable housing. Their project at 160 Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn, known as Breaking Ground Schermerhorn, is a prime example of their innovative approach. This isn't a conventional real estate agency where you'd list a property or find a luxury rental. Instead, it is a crucial real estate entity that develops and manages housing for some of the city's most vulnerable residents, including formerly homeless individuals and those with low incomes. This article will provide an overview of this unique real estate model and the vital role it plays in the Brooklyn community.
Breaking Ground is a pioneer in the development of supportive and affordable housing. Founded on the belief that a safe and stable home is the first step toward a person's well-being, the organization works to combat homelessness and housing instability in New York City. The Schermerhorn building, opened in 2009, is a collaborative project that provides a haven for its residents. The building is not only a place to live but a full-service community, offering a suite of on-site services to help residents stabilize their lives. It represents a different kind of "real estate agency"—one where the goal is not profit, but people. The reviews and public information about the building highlight both the challenges and the critical importance of this work. While some residents express concerns about the physical condition of units or the struggles of some tenants, they also acknowledge the dedication of the staff and the vital role the building plays. This dynamic underscores the complex and compassionate nature of Breaking Ground’s mission, which is to provide housing to people who face significant challenges, often with a history of mental health issues, substance abuse, or chronic homelessness.

February 14 · Michelle AliceaI do agree there are a lot of Junkies hanging outside the building. This is something I don't understand. When they have a place to stay... I mean when I first moved there the place was absolutely gorgeous.. Now I see roaches but I haven't seen any rats yet. I have Zero understanding why these people that stay there choose to be Junkies when the Church gives out clothing and hygiene. But that's just a scam to panhandle. People look "some of these people make more money than you and I from SSI, disability and other government support. It all boils down to addiction.... Simple and plain.. And the staff there is magnificent but there is only so much that they can do.... It is difficult to work with people that have a mental disorder Plus a drug or alcohol addiction on top of that... Come on they are only humans not God... I give the staff credit for trying their best...
August 23 · Marvell CallowayToo many junkies in here. They even deal drugs here and it's okay. Maybe I should deal crack too!!! Rat infestation.. drunks outside asking for money all the time. They let 8 people die in two years. They don't help people.. sad. Why do anyone work here if they don't help people?!! 😔
August 11 · George SandstromThey always lie telling me they going to do my ID they never made my ID waited till this day for my ID nothing. They also said they were going to give me a one document to fill out never happened they had me waiting from 8:30am to 8 :00 pm on one occasion.they keep telling we going to do your ID your paper work we will get on it again they sold me false dreams and hopes.mind you I'm homeless in the streets.
January 26 · Gabriel AbrahamThe way they run there business is completely unprofessional. As far as the main supervisor she doesnt do he job correctly. They dont help there clients in anyways. Most of them all still use. They let the crack dealers sit in front of a building.Every single day they line up like it a mc donalds drive way.
