January 13 · Amanda AshworthThis story is about 5 years old, so the staff may have changed here by now. Consider this fair warning for all young medical professionals moving to the area to work for Northwell. Do not sign anything for this group or the Glen Oaks property group/home owners association.Every year on my birthday, from infancy until I became a teen, my grandfather would send a savings bond. I saved them for years, and I redeemed my savings bonds for a deposit on whatever apartment we were going to settle into in NY. When I moved to NY to start my fellowship in Pediatric Oncology, I wanted to live close to the hospital. Glen Oaks was a perfect spot, right behind the hospital, basically just a short walk to work! Lots of other young professionals and hospital staff lived there, and it came highly recommended from the hospital. My partner and I went to tour Glen Oaks, and were shown around by a nice-enough man. He showed us a "lower-mid range" apartment that was just so-so before showing us a "newly renovated" apartment that was more expensive but in "high demand." I told him I had all the paperwork ready to go, as well as the deposit. He said great, he would run the paperwork, and if I didn't mind, would I sign this form saying that I intended to live in Glen Oaks? I said sure, that is fine, here is the security deposit, looking forward to hearing from you.It turns out, incredibly, that my debt to income ratio was too high (shocking, truly, a resident with a medical school loan, so little income and so much debt, who ever had heard of such a thing) for them to approve my application, which should have been my first red flag. Multiple other residents were in the same exact boat, why was my income such an issue? He said I could have my partner be a co-signer and they would run his credit. Lo and behold, he was the victim of identity theft/fraud, and had so much debt (but a great credit score, oddly) that they also could not use him as a cosigner. At this point, he said they were going to have to refuse my application, and while disappointed, I said ok, thanks, can I get my deposit back since you didn't accept my application and I didn't sign a lease? He said no, the one-page document I signed in his office basically said that if I did not get the apartment, I forfeited the deposit. I was in disbelief. I was a resident with very low income and had cashed savings bonds that had fully matured just to afford this deposit. Where was I going to get the money for a deposit on ANOTHER apartment in NY? He was very apologetic, and offered to refund half of the deposit, which he said was his commission, but the home-owners' association would not be giving up their half, which was basically my application fee.Long story long, I ended up in a cheaper apartment 10 minutes from the hospital that was cozier and homier with much more storage space and lovely landlords who gave us a rent discount because we shoveled all the snow every winter. I do not regret not living at Glen Oaks, but I will never forgive or forget the realtors who stole all of the money my grandfather had kindly given to me as a child.Beware of this group, they are sharks and con artists.
